Palaweno Brewery

The Place to Go for Craft Beer in Puerto Princesa

Palaweno Brewery is gaining quite a reputation for their delicious craft beers brewed locally right in downtown Puerto Princesa. I spent a rainy afternoon here enjoying the beer with some old friends, and some new. A visit to the Palaweno taproom is the perfect way to take a break from the heat and humidity of the Philippines.

Palaweno Brewing Beer and Rum

Beer is always better when shared with friends, or friends of friends.

Ayah Javier is a self-taught brewer who started her career with a home brewing kit and a dream, to bring craft beer to the Philippines. Soon she partnered with Malu Lauengco and established Palaweno Brewery, the first female owned and operated craft brewery in the Philippines.

Palawan Beach

Palawan beaches pair perfectly with cold beer.

The two set up shop in Palawan's capital city Puerto Princesa, and Ayah set out to create what is now a line of microbrews that have brought Palaweno Brewery global media attention and local sales of 1,200 cases per month.

Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!

This number may not impress larger beer brands, but for an artisanal brewer that still hand bottles and labels ever beer, it’s quite something. In fact, those 1,200 cases are four times the amount of beer Palaweno produced per month just 2-years ago.

As word gets out and popularity grows more and more travelers are finding their way to this laid-back tropical taproom to sample Ayah’s creations.

Palaweno Brewery Beers

There are five beers in regular production at Palaweno; Ambog an American-style Ale, Palawan Wit a Belgian-style wheat ale, Honey Kolsch, Ayahay IPA and Hunter Honey Nut Brown, which is an English-style brown ale. Seasonal beers are added to the rotation throughout the year. Prices range from PHP 150 / USD 3.00 to PHP 250 / USD 5.00.

Palawan Buko Rum

Palawan Buko Rum

There is one Palaweno Brewery product that gets little mention, their coconut rum. Unlike most coconut rum, this is not an artificially flavored blackout bomb. It is made with fresh coconut, creating a smooth, flavorful taste of the tropics.

Palaweno makes the small batch rum with the help of prisoners from Puerto Princesa’s Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, a fact as compelling as the rum itself. At this time it can be purchased only at Palaweno. PHP 150 / USD 3.00 per shot pr PHP 800 / USD 15.00 for a 300 ml bottle. I recommend you buy the whole bottle.
