Diving Fun Fact

White-Spotted Pufferfish, Red Sea, Egypt

The white-spotted pufferfish (Arothron hispidus) is commonly spotted in the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea.

These fish have four teeth that grow continuously, and fuse into a beak shape. They use this "beak" to eat crustaceans, corals, and other invertebrates.

Like other pufferfish, they have a symbiotic relationship with certain types of bacteria which produce powerful neurotoxins that are stored by the fish in its skin and organs.

They are generally shy and non-aggressive, but are capable of inflicting a powerful bite if threatened. We photographed this puffer on a night dive in the red sea with Blue Force Fleet. For more about diving in the Red Sea, read Scuba diving the Red Sea Aboard the Blue Force 3 Liveaboard, Egypt
