Hairy Frogfish, Lembeh, Indonesia

The hairy frogfish is an extremely effective ambush hunter. Their skin is covered in irregular dermal spindles which resemble hairs and they can change color to disappear in their surroundings. Hairy frogfish use their first dorsal spine as a fishing lure, and their mouth opens wide enough to devour prey as large as themselves. We encountered this fish in Lembeh, Indonesia.
